The AHD range of shore hardness durometers uses an integral penetration tool to measure the hardness of the substrate. Substrate falls into 3 categories:
Shore A rubber, elastomers, neoprene, silicone, vinyl, soft plastics, felt, leather and similar materials
Shore O foam, sponge etc
Shore D plastics, formica, epoxies, plexiglass etc
