Recent Legislative Changes
RoHS and WEEE Directives -
What are the directives?
Both are EU Directives which have to be implemented in the law of all member states.
Many countries outside the EU are implementing similar laws including America, Japan and China.
RoHS[Reduction of Hazardous Substances]
Effective 1st July 2006, the RoHS Directive bans the sales of new electronic and electrical equipment which contains more than the permitted amounts of certain chemicals and metals, for products purchased and not physically in the EU by that date.
However there are a number of exempted applications for these substances.
WEEE Compliance
WEEE Information for ATP Instrumentation Customers
Under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and implementing regulations, when customers buy new electrical and electronic equipment from ATP Instrumentation they are entitled to:
• send old equipment for recycling on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis
• send the new equipment back for recycling when this ultimately becomes waste
ATP Instrumentation Ltd is a registered member of a Producer Compliance Scheme approved under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2006. ATP’s UK Producer Registration Number is: WEE/EB0115XU.
Complying with the regulations and the increased environmental costs for the business has implications both for ATP Instrumentation and its customers.
Instructions for customers and details on costs of compliance are provided below.
Collection and Recycling Arrangements in the United Kingdom
Under the UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations, for equipment that you buy from ATP Instrumentation Ltd after August 2005, ATP is required to provide arrangements for the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of WEEE that your new purchase replaces, on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. The old equipment that your new purchase from ATP replaces is referred to as Historic WEEE.
Under the UK WEEE Regulations, ATP Instrumentation is also required to provide arrangements for the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of any new electrical and electronic equipment that you bought from ATP after August 2005, when that new equipment eventually becomes waste. This is referred to as New WEEE.
ATP Instrumentation has been required to provide these arrangements from 1 July 2007.
Complying with the UK WEEE Regulations has incurred increased operating costs for suppliers such as ATP Instrumentation. Instead of increasing the prices of our products, ATP Instrumentation has absorbed the majority of the costs but has to share these new environmental costs directly with our customers.
Our approach to sharing these new environmental costs is:
• ATP Instrumentation pays for the costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of the WEEE to meet the targets set by the WEEE Regulations;
• ATP Instrumentation pays for the costs of data management and reporting to the Environment Agency to demonstrate compliance with all administrative requirements of the WEEE Regulations;
• You pay for transportation of your equipment for WEEE recycling back to ATP Instrumentation in the UK.
