Hot-wire Anemometers

Hot-wire Anemometers

The hot wire anemometer is an ideal tool for those looking to carry out surveys of ventilation/air conditioning, environmental monitoring, and a multitude of other similar tasks that require the measurement of air flow velocity. It is well suited for measuring low air velocity and volume.

What is a Hot Wire Anemometer?

A hot wire anemometer works in a very different way to standard anemometers that work using cups or propellers. They use a fine wire or strip of metal which is heated up by a constant current. The movement of air past the wire or strip has a cooling effect. The changing temperature of the metal and its electrical resistance is used to accurately determine air speed and pressure. This process, although complex, is highly accurate and means that they are used for applications that demand the greatest precision.

Hot wire anemometers operate on the basis of maintaining the sensor element at a constant temperature. This often limits the battery life.
